There are many ways to conserve energy and so lower your utility bills. Make sure that your windows are properly sealed and they are thick enough to provide the right insulation. Keep them closed if you're A/C or heater are running. Fans consume less energy than A/C so in the milder months this may be a more affordable option. Turn off lights when leaving a room and always when you leave the house. Do not leave your TV on if you are not actually watching it. Have an expert look at your faucets and make sure there are no water leaks either. Shower instead of bathing, and turn off the tap when you are shaving or shampooing your hair. Unplug appliances when you aren't using them.
All these may seem like small things, but they all do add up. If you have kids, share the electrical bill with them, and perhaps offer to give them every dollar the family saves on the next bill (by turning lights off, etc.), for their piggybank. A friend of mine did this with her kids and shaved off $10 off her electrical bill every month. |
